Intel confirms AVX-512 for future desktop CPUs

AVX10.2 512b coming with Nova Lake

A brief note in the latest oneDNN update confirms that Intel plans to bring back 512-bit AVX instructions to future desktop CPUs, most likely with Nova Lake.

The update adds early support for AVX10.2 512-bit for "future Intel Core and Xeon processors". While it is not enabled by default and must be turned on manually, this is pretty much the first confirmation that Intel plans to bring back AVX-512 to its desktop CPUs.

The AVX-512 support was previously available on Intel desktop CPUs, ending with Rocket Lake, mostly due to the fact that Intel switched to a design that featured P- and E-cores. Since E-cores did not support AVX-512, Intel simply removed it in order to avoid problems with scheduling and compatibility, although, in theory, P-cores still had the hardware support.

The Intel AVX10.2 should bring several improvements, including full support for 128-bit, 256-bit, and 512-bit instructions, as well as support on both P- and E-cores. Since AMD already offers full AVX-512 support on Ryzen 9000 desktop CPUs, Intel had to respond accordingly, as noted by Videocardz.com.
