The Guardian reported that the Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) portal, a system loaded with everything from therapy notes to photos, abuse histories, and family addresses, was accessed by Kyle Schutt (pictured)—Musk's Department of Government Efficiency coder.
Health and Human Services official Jen Smyers said, “I certainly would be concerned about Doge's access to the portal – why it was used, which child information was accessed, and for what purpose?” Were mental health records accessed? These are the most vulnerable children in their most vulnerable moments.”
Mark Greenberg, a former HHS official, asked, “It’s not obvious why Doge would want or need access to this very sensitive information.”
Musk’s DOGE agents have reportedly infiltrated more than 20 agencies under the guise of detecting “waste, fraud, and abuse.” But the UAC portal, as officials explain, isn’t built for that—it’s a safeguarding tool for migrant kids and their sponsors during the immigration slog.
“Musk has signalled a strong interest in determining whether unauthorised immigrants are receiving federal benefits, but this is not a benefits program,” Greenberg said. “The child does not receive any financial assistance, and the sponsor does not receive any financial assistance.”
DOGE staff insist they’re giving old government systems a polish, but Smyers isn’t having it.
“The idea that some random guy from Doge could go in and find an issue with the portal that the staff haven’t already diagnosed – I don’t buy that.”
