As we reported earlier, stories have been circling since February, with different motherboard makers having issues with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D
It appears that a memory compatibility gremlin was finally fingered as the culprit.
We are aware of a limited number of user reports regarding ASRock AM5 motherboards that fail to complete the POST. Following a joint investigation, AMD and ASRock identified a memory capability issue present in earlier BIOS versions, which has been rectified in the latest BIOS.”
Despite more than a hundred recorded failures to post with the 9800X3D, AMD insists it's a minor issue given the sheer volume of systems in the wild.
“It’s worth noting that a range of factors can cause a failure to POST and does not necessarily indicate a non-functional CPU,” the firm told Tom’s Hardware.
ASRock has already provided updated BIOSes and stated that only one CPU appeared damaged—although AMD later claimed it wasn't toasted but somewhat dirty.
“The motherboard did not have burn marks, and it was just debris that needed some cleaning,” AMD said. After a scrub, the board posted and held up well in extended testing.
The chip is still considered one of the best gaming CPUs available, so it’s no surprise that both firms are on high alert for trouble. If a BIOS update doesn’t fix things, AMD says to hit up support—most likely ending in an RMA which, according to the company, usually does the trick.
