Hackers are making a fortune selling spyware to suspicious spouses who want to monitor and control their partners' every online move.

Anna Stepanov, Manager of the Anti-spyware Program at McAfee Avert Labs, said the software was also being used as a surveillance tool in cases of domestic abuse. She said spyware is ideal for abusers, who often feel the need to control all aspects of their victims' existence.

In a white paper released this week called /Spyware: A Morphing Campaign, she said that monitoring a victim's online access, cell phone log, or general computing activity is of more value than ever in controlling or threatening to hurt a victim.
