Greenerwave wins big with French military

Breakthrough antenna tech scores major defence contract

Greenerwave has landed a plum deal with the French Armed Forces, thanks to some rather natty satellite communication wizardry.

The deal is outlined in a contract issued by the French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction Générale de l’Armement – DGA), led by Airbus Defence and Space, with assistance from satellite provider Eutelsat OneWeb.

The goal is to boost military connectivity using Greenerwave’s Satcom on the Move tech, tested inside a vehicle with the Ku-band on Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation.

This agreement is the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes collaboration with the DGA and the French Defence Innovation Agency (AID). Now Greenerwave gets to show off its shiny toys to the military brass.

The idea is to prop up the French military's comms with Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites alongside the SYRACUSE IV strategic comms system. All this makes Greenerwave look rather important in the world of military gear, promising solutions that tick all the sovereignty, mobility and resilience boxes.

At the core of Greenerwave’s magic are its multi-orbit user terminals, which sip power and keep semiconductor use to a bare minimum. Their antennas are passive, electronically reconfigurable devices that still manage to be high-performing and tough enough for war zones.

The deal includes an initial €2.8 million order, which will enable the kit to reach the French military more quickly. Another €10 million plus order could be in the pipeline if the tech doesn’t let anyone down.

Greenerwave chief executive and co-founder Geoffroy Lerosey, said: “We are honoured to contribute to this contract with cutting-edge French technology, and proud to actively support the strategic and operational autonomy of our Armed Forces.”

DGA’s SATCOM programme director Didier Landi said: “Connectivity via Eutelsat OneWeb’s LEO constellation today, and Europe’s future IRIS² constellation tomorrow, are a major strategic priority for the French Armed Forces, complementing the military satellite capabilities of SYRACUSE IV.”

Large-scale deployment of such connectivity must be achieved at a controlled cost, aligned with the need to scale up resources.

“With this contract, the DGA is not only strengthening the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces, but also promoting French technological innovation as a credible alternative to foreign tech giants, fully aligned with a war economy approach,” Landi said

Greenerwave also signed a new R&D deal with Thales to test how its antenna performs in the Ka-band using the SYRACUSE IV constellation, keeping their name in the military's good books.
