Apple shells out over borked batteries

Overhyped watches were swell and not in a good way

Apple Watch owners who bought into the marketing hype around its first three generations may be entitled to some cash over their poor design.

Job’s Mob has agreed to a $20 million class action settlement for the Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 Apple Watches, which had battery swelling issues that damaged the devices.

Apple denied any wrongdoing and said it “strongly” disagrees with the claims made in the lawsuit, but “agreed to settle to avoid further litigation.”

The exact payment amount will depend on how many claimants participate, but they’re expected to be between $20 and $50 per eligible device.

One reason Apple might have agreed to back down is that it does not see the need to pay out much. To receive payment, you must have reported the issue to Apple in the US between April 24, 2015, and February 6, 2024.

“Settlement Class Members will receive a payment without the need to submit a claim form,” the website notes.

You must submit your payment information through the settlement website by April 10. Notices of eligibility will be sent out by mail and email.
