Xbox buttoned up in black

Two versions, one secret handshake with Vole

Images from certification agencies have prematurely unboxed the Asus ROG Ally 2. The surprise is that one of them appears to be Vole's long-rumoured Xbox handheld.

The software king of the world, Microsoft has  tagged in Asus to produce Project Kennan, a portable console with Xbox branding. The all-black version looks nearly identical to the standard white ROG Ally 2 but includes a dedicated Xbox button tucked above the D-pad. That spot is suspiciously blacked out on the white model, likely hiding a placeholder.

Regulatory images from the FCC and Indonesia’s equivalent agency show both versions come with dual USB-C ports along the top and redesigned controller grips that are more sculpted than the first generation’s slope-like handles. The overall hardware appears bulkier, but that may help with comfort in long sessions.

The key difference is inside. The Xbox model packs an 8-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor running at 36W. The standard white version is saddled with a 4-core, 20W chip. That gap will be noticeable for anyone trying to push AAA titles on the go.

“The Xbox button is hard to spot,” the FCC admitted, but it is unmistakably there for those who know where to look. With certification already ticking along, it is likely Asus and Microsoft are planning to show it off in the next couple of weeks. Microsoft’s Build event kicks off on 19 May and Computex, where Asus typically announces hardware, starts the next day on 20 May.

Known specs so far:

  • 7-inch 120Hz LCD display
  • Xbox edition: 8-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 36W TDP
  • Standard edition: 4-core AMD Ryzen chip, 20W TDP
  • Dual USB-C ports
  • Redesigned, thicker controller grips
