EA throws a bone to gamers

Electronic Arts (EA) has released the source code for several classic Command & Conquer titles.

Games such as Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Renegade, and Generals & Zero Hour are now available under the GPL license. This allows enthusiasts to mix, match, and redistribute them to their hearts' content without EA-legal eagles smashing the door.

EA has also provided Steam Workshop support for multiple Command & Conquer titles, including Renegade, Generals, Zero Hour, Tiberium Wars, Kane's Wrath, and Tiberian Twilight.

They've even updated mission editor tools and provided a modding support pack.

EA's official announcement states, "We are enabling the Steam Workshop support for more C&C titles to allow users to upload their custom maps!"

This magnanimous act comes after EA commissioned Command & Conquer community veteran Luke 'CCHyper' Feenan to research improvements for many of the games in the Ultimate Collection.

The Command & Conquer community, and yes that is a thing, stands to benefit the most from this unexpected windfall.

Command & Conquer is a pioneering real-time strategy (RTS) video game franchise that debuted in 1995. Developed by Westwood Studios, the series is renowned for its strategic gameplay, engaging storylines, and the use of full-motion video cutscenes. The franchise encompasses multiple series, including the Tiberian series, Red Alert series, and Generals series, each offering unique narratives and factions.

In June 2020, Electronic Arts released the "Command & Conquer Remastered Collection," which includes remastered versions of the original "Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn" and "Red Alert," along with their expansion packs. This collection featured enhanced graphics, improved sound, and modernised online capabilities.
