Kills off Wonder Woman

Warner Bros Discovery has swung the axe on its gaming division, shutting down three studios and scrapping its highly anticipated Wonder Woman game.

The shock move, announced in an internal memo by CEO JB Perrette, follows what he called a "disappointing 2024" for WB's gaming business. The closures affect Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego.

Monolith, the studio behind the acclaimed Lord of the Rings titles Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, had been developing the Wonder Woman game, which was announced back in 2021 and was set to feature its Nemesis system. That project has now been axed.

Player First Games, acquired by WB just last year, saw early success with MultiVersus, a platform fighter that amassed 20 million players. However, its fortunes quickly turned, with the game's online services now set to be shut down when its fifth season ends in May.

WB Games San Diego, which was focused on AAA free-to-play gaming, is also getting the chop. This latest bloodbath follows layoffs at WB Games Montreal and the decision to scale back on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

In his internal memo, Perrette outlined WB's new, narrower focus, stating that its gaming efforts will now revolve around just four properties: Harry Potter (including Hogwarts Legacy), Mortal Kombat, the DC universe, and Game of Thrones.

"We need to make some substantial changes to our portfolio/team structure if we are to commit the necessary resources to get back to a ‘fewer but bigger franchises’ strategy," he said.

The news will come as a bitter blow to fans of Monolith and its unique game design, as well as those who had high hopes for Wonder Woman’s gaming debut. For WB, however, the message is clear: only the biggest names in entertainment will survive.
