Turn off Apple Intelligence

by on31 January 2025

Security issues and just weird

The fruity cargo cult Apple’s Apple Intelligence product is now included by default in iOS 18.3 for iPhones, and security experts are warning that it should be disabled.

Before the update, iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro/Max users had to turn on the awful Apple Intelligence in their settings manually, but now, the AI features are turned on by default.

Not only does Apple Intelligence pull information from apps and tack action within them, but the technology requires a lot of storage to do so.  The AI system will take up 7GB, regardless of what device it is running on.

Next, some of the features are just silly.  As TechRadar's John-Anthony Disotto  pointed out:

“When it comes to summarising any form of instant messaging, however, it’s one of the weirdest and most dystopian things I’ve ever encountered on an iPhone. Seeing Apple Intelligence streamline my friends and family members’ messages into single lines of text with a robotic tone freaks me out a little, especially considering that seven out of 10 times it gets the point of the messages completely wrong.”

How-to-Geek’s Shikhar Mehrotra said that while most Apple Intelligence requests are processed on the device, those sent to the cloud are secured by Private Cloud Compute.

Apple's privacy page claims: "Your data is never stored and is used only to respond to your requests. " Even so, some iPhone users will be more comfortable not using the GenAI features and might want to turn them off.

“All the new features on your iPhone include a learning curve. Further, features like Notification Summaries, which hide all notification contents, might be annoying for iPhone owners, especially professionals who rely on email or Slack to communicate with their team regularly.”

The Daily Mail, which is not renowned for its tech advice says Apple Intelligence is dangerous and needs to be switched off.

It suggests opening the Settings app, scroll down and select Apple Intelligence & Siri.

Then, toggle off Apple Intelligence and confirm 'Turn Off Apple Intelligence' when prompted.

A far better way to end your Apple Intelligence problems is to drop your phone in a fast-flowing river and replace it with something cheaper and better, where the AI is a little more advanced.
