Vera Rubin platform ushers in power revolution for AI data centres

Graphics giant Nvidia has kicked off what it claims is a data centre power revolution, announcing its next-gen Vera Rubin platform and dragging the world into the 800-volt direct current age.

The announcement was made on its official website on 14 October and included a roster of partners for this so-called power leap.

For MediaTek and BizLink, this could mean serious cash. MediaTek has teamed up with Nvidia on its GB10 AI supercomputer chip and is tipped to be getting chummy on AI PCs as well.

BizLink, which already wires up Nvidia cabinets with Power Whips, Rack Busbars, Busbar connectors and data transmission harnesses, has now muscled into Nvidia’s power supply inner circle.

Industry sources reckon that to keep pace with AI’s ferocious appetite for power, Nvidia is cranking chip voltage output from 54V to a scorching 800V. This voltage surge is expected to open a fresh barrel of business opportunities. Once reliant on Western chipmakers for power ICs, Nvidia now counts the MediaTek as its only Taiwanese chip partner in this overhaul.

According to the information Nvidia posted on its website, a total of 14 chip suppliers are on board for this power upgrade. MediaTek has sneaked in through its power IC outfit Richtek, joining the ranks of Infineon, STMicroelectronics, Renesas, ROHM, ADI, and others like ON Semiconductor and Deyi.

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang said more than 20 firms are working on open standard rack servers to enable future megawatt-scale AI factories. The power ecosystem now includes chipmakers, data centre power gear suppliers, and power component manufacturers.

Richtek, under the MediaTek umbrella, makes power management ICs used in data centres, EVs, comms kit, industrial setups, and consumer gear. It bangs on about efficient power use, high accuracy, and performance for storage and server gear.

As for BizLink, it’s being hailed as a dark horse among Nvidia’s seven newly minted power system component suppliers. It’s listed alongside old-school names like Delta and Lite-On, and Chinese outfits including Megmeet, Lead Wealth, and Flextronics.

BizLink flaunted its tech chops in high-speed interconnect, power-optical integration, and its new OCP-compliant AC100A+ and DC400V/800V setups. These are designed for computing and power cabinets and aim to feed the growing hunger for large-scale AI grunt.

BizLink Computing and Transportation Business Group senior vice president Lin Mingcun said the firm is blending co-packaged copper fibre, OCP power supplies, high-speed interconnect, and optical tech to help build the next-gen AI backbone and firm up its role in the global data centre circus.

While Taiwan has scored some component wins, the main data centre power system providers are ABB, Eaton, GE Vernova, Schneider, Siemens, Hitachi Energy, Mitsubishi Electric, Vertiv and Heron Power.
