Anker dumps 3D printer business

Comprehensive support turns out to be not that comprehensive

Charging gear peddler Anker appears to have given up on the idea of making 3D printers.

For those who came in late, the outfit made a lot of noise in March about spinning off its 3D printer division into a supposedly independent sub-brand called EufyMake. The idea was that this new outfit would carry on supporting the AnkerMake M5 and M5C printers, promising “comprehensive customer service and support.”

That now looks likemarketing waffle. EufyMake isn’t flogging any 3D printers anymore and has even pulled some key parts from sale, making the promise of ongoing support look about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Anker told The Verge that it has paused sales of the M5 and M5C indefinitely. Spokesperson Brett White said, “Sales have been paused,” but didn’t seem able to confirm if they’d ever start again or whether there’s another model on the way. My understanding is that EufyMake has not ruled out creating new 3D printer models in the future. But the brand has ended sales of the M5 and M5C for the time being."

While that might sound cautiously optimistic, the 3D printer section of EufyMake’s website is completely bare. The only thing they’re hawking now is a UV printer that slaps textures onto flat surfaces, which is hardly the same thing.

Anker’s foray into 3D printing didn’t exactly go smoothly. The original M5 was pitched as a fix-all for common 3D printing headaches but ended up with plenty of its own issues. The cheaper M5C went down better with hobbyists but dropped key features like a built-in screen just to hit that lower price point.

So while no one's come out and said the quiet part aloud, it looks very much like Anker's big 3D printing experiment is done and dusted.
