Sound United gets snapped up by Samsung’s HARMAN

Masimo, better known for sticking sensors on sick people than flogging headphones, has finally offloaded its Sound United consumer audio unit to HARMAN International for $350 million in cash.

The deal hands brands like Bowers & Wilkins, Denon and Marantz to Samsung’s audio arm and frees Masimo to concentrate on its medical gadgetry obsession.

The sale, expected to wrap up by the end of 2025 pending regulatory rubber-stamping, marks the end of Masimo’s brief and bizarre foray into the world of premium audio. It  follows a strategic review clearly aimed at clearing the decks for more blood-oxygen monitors and fewer Bluetooth speakers.

Masimo board vice chairman Quentin Koffey said, “Finding the right home for this business has been a stated priority of the new Board from day one. The deal represents an important milestone” in the company’s plan to chase higher revenue with tighter margins."

Koffey reckons Masimo’s got the right “healthcare-focused strategy” and enough momentum to push forward.

HARMAN, lifestyle boss Dave Rogers said: “This acquisition represents a strategic step forward” for its core audio portfolio. Rogers a lot of merit in joining Sound United’s brands with JBL, Harman Kardon and the rest of HARMAN’s AV mob, calling it a way to offer “more choices to consumers” and “complementary audio products”.

Masimo CEO Katie Szymansaid the sale aligns with her goal of funnelling effort into clinical innovation and operational efficiency.
