The new functions have tipped up on a reveal of Vole's latest Surface devices which will roll out through 2025 and will arrive in Europe later. Users without Copilot+ hardware will be left out for now.
The new AI agent in Settings lets you type something like “make my mouse pointer bigger” and it handles the task for you. It runs locally, does not require the cloud and only understands English.
Click to Do now pulls actions straight from what is on your screen. It can turn text into bullet points, create calendar entries from email or move a table into Excel. The idea is to avoid switching between apps.
Photos gets Relight, which adds virtual lighting to images. Paint can generate stickers from text prompts and select individual objects for editing. There is also a new generative fill tool.
Snipping Tool gets Perfect Screenshot, which automatically crops around the main content. It also adds a colour picker and a text extractor. These are meant to reduce the need for extra editing.
Narrator now gives rich image descriptions for people using screen readers. Pressing Narrator key with Ctrl and D triggers a spoken summary of the image. This works for charts, people and interface elements.
The Start menu sorts apps based on what you use most. It has a phone companion panel that links to Android or iOS. File Explorer gets right-click AI actions to summarise documents or edit images.
Notepad now includes a write function and a summarise feature. It supports markdown formatting with headings, lists and styles. Copilot can now be started with a voice command or by holding its key.
Microsoft is encouraging developers to use the neural processor built into Copilot+ PCs. Moises Live separates music tracks in real time. Gigapixel AI enlarges images with very little quality loss. Capcut, DJay Pro and DaVinci Resolve also benefit from this hardware.
The Microsoft Store has added an AI Hub and shows badges for apps designed for Copilot+. Copilot itself is now built into the Store and can help you pick apps or games.
Most of these features are in preview and limited to Windows Insiders.
