HP fined $4 million for fake discounts

Maker of expensive printer ink admits nothing

The maker of expensive printer ink, HP Inc. is forking out $4 million after getting caught using bogus discounts and phoney scarcity tactics on its website to flog PCs and accessories.

US District Judge P. Casey Pitts signed off on the class-action settlement earlier this month. It stems from claims that HP slapped “strike-through” prices on products like laptops, mice, and keyboards that had never actually been sold at the inflated “original” prices in the first place.

If you bought an HP machine or peripheral between 5 June 2021 and 28 October 2024 that seemed to be on permanent sale, you might be owed between $10 and $100. That includes popular lines like Spectre, Pavilion, Chromebook Envy laptops, Envy and Omen desktops.

According to filings, HP.com routinely pretended items were running out with “Only 1 Left!” claims, even though they kept flogging them weeks later. It also advertised limited-time deals while leaving them up indefinitely.

The complaint pointed to cases like Rodney Carvalho’s, who bought an HP All-in-One PC supposedly marked down from $999.99 to $899.99. In reality, it had been selling for $899.99 for months. The court was told HP’s false pricing “induces [buyers] to pay more for its products and make purchases they would not have otherwise made.”

HP isn’t admitting it did anything wrong but the $4 million will go into a non-reversionary fund to pay out claimants, cover admin, and reward the class reps with up to $5,000 each.
