Apple’s smart home is not that clever

Caused by Siri delays

The Fruity Cargo Cult has once again fumbled its smart home hub plans, thanks to its much-hyped but perpetually underwhelming Siri upgrade running into delays.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Job’s Mob has been forced to postpone announcing its upcoming smart home display. The display apparently hinges on a “smarter” Siri that isn’t ready for prime time.

The much-vaunted AI assistant, which was supposed to get a brain transplant enabling it to understand personal context and act inside apps, is taking longer to roll out than expected.

Last month, Gurman suggested that the souped-up Siri might not arrive on time, and Apple itself confirmed as much, vaguely stating that users should expect more personalised features “in the coming year.”

Given the way the fruity firm talks about deadlines, that could mean any time between now and the heat death of the universe.

The smart home hub itself, meant to compete with Amazon’s Echo devices and Google’s Nest Hub, was originally tipped for a March reveal.

That’s now looking about as likely as Elon [roman salute] Musk making a sensible government savings decision. Job’s Mob has reportedly started letting some of its employees test the device at home, but without a fully functioning Siri, it’s probably about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Apple Intelligence, which was supposed to be a grand AI push for the company, continues to be mostly smoke and mirrors. So far, the only new Siri tricks that have made it to users are the ability to type requests instead of speaking, some basic product knowledge, a new activation animation, and ChatGPT integration. Even Apple has realised that Siri alone can’t manage it.

Bloomberg previously reported that Job’s Mob is years away from fully integrating Siri with large language models to make it even vaguely competitive with its rivals. In the meantime, Apple fans will just have to keep waiting for their AI-powered dream assistant while clinging to whatever half-baked features Cupertino decides to throw their way.
