This decision is a direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods, which signalled escalating tensions between the neighbouring countries.
For those not in the know, Ford leads Canada's most populous province and has expressed strong disapproval of the US tariffs. He stated that Ontario will not engage with entities that support actions detrimental to the province's economy.
"We won't award contracts to people who enable and encourage economic attacks on our province and our country." Ford said.
The Premier's decision to terminate the Starlink contract is part of a broader strategy to counteract the U.S. tariffs. Ontario has also initiated measures such as removing US-produced alcohol from its provincial liquor stores.
The trade dispute intensified after President Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian imports to protect US industries. In retaliation, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, with the possibility of additional measures if the US tariffs persist.
Trudeau criticised Trump's approach, labelling the tariffs as "dumb" and accusing the US of instigating a trade war.
Ford underscored the need for Canada to be prepared for a prolonged dispute, stating, "We need to be ready to escalate using every tool in our tool kit."
One area where it might get ugly is where Canada props up the US's under invested power supply. Apparently US states have been warned that Canadian-dependent power grids will be subject to 25 per cent tarriffs or be cut of completely.
Getting at Trump through his oligarchic friend is a new one. Musk’s companies have been taking a hit, with Tesla sales plummeting by 48 per cent compared to last year and is worth a trillion dollars less.
