by on28 February 2025

May day, may day

Software King of the World Microsoft is planning to shut down Skype in May 2025, encouraging users to transition to Microsoft Teams for their communication needs.

While Microsoft has not yet made an official public announcement regarding Skype's discontinuation, the evidence from recent software previews suggests that the company is preparing for this change.

The latest Skype for Windows preview, which states, "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams."

Skype, launched in 2003, was acquired by Microsoft in 2011. Over the years, its prominence has diminished due to the rise of competing platforms like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Discord.

Microsoft has been focusing on Teams, especially since its launch in 2017, positioning it as a comprehensive collaboration tool that integrates with other Microsoft 365 services.

This strategic shift aims to consolidate Microsoft's communication platforms, providing users with a unified experience.

In line with this transition, Microsoft has already discontinued certain Skype features, such as Skype Credit and Skype Number, in favour of subscription-based services.

Users have noticed that it has been behaving oddly by doing things like refusing to send Word documents.
