Snapdragon Summit in Southeast Asia

Qualcomm showcased its Snapdragon X-powered device lineup at the Snapdragon Summit in Southeast Asia (SEA).

The Snapdragon X series, comprising Snapdragon X, Snapdragon X Plus, and Snapdragon X Elite, now covers a wider range of price points, including the lower $600 segment.

First announced in October 2023 with the range-topping Snapdragon X Elite, these ARM-based chips promise long-lasting battery life while delivering 45 TOPS NPU for an unparalleled AI experience.

Southeast Asia is the fastest market to adopt the latest technologies, including AI. Qualcomm believes its Snapdragon X devices will win over SEA consumers with superior AI capabilities and energy efficiency.

During the first-ever SEA summit held in Singapore, Qualcomm showcased the latest Snapdragon X powered Copilot+ laptops from leading brands like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft. Southeast Asia, with over 8 million PCs shipped in 2024, is expected to continue its rapid adoption of new technologies.

Qualcomm has shared that 92 percent of APAC employers plan to implement AI tools by 2028, and generative AI tools saved over 11 billion hours per week across the region.

Qualcomm recently announced its "base-level" Snapdragon X at CES 2025 to cater to consumers in the affordable segment. This new chip features an 8-core Oryon CPU clocked at 3.0GHz and a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU that boasts the same class-leading 45 TOPS NPU performance as its higher-tier Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite options.

Qualcomm claims that its mainstream Snapdragon X chip offers higher performance, greater power efficiency, and up to twice the battery life compared to an Intel Core 5 120U.

According to Tweaktown, Qualcomm's Vice President and President for SEA, Taiwan, and NZ, ST Liew, expressed confidence that consumers in the region, including Malaysia, will switch to Snapdragon X platforms.

He said that Qualcomm has built a strong foundation in Malaysia and has collaborated extensively with Microsoft, distributors, and retailers.

Liew highlighted that dozens of new models are being developed by OEMs, and the Snapdragon X platform will be able to cover many different segments of the marketplace. The response from those who have experienced Snapdragon X-powered products has been "very, very positive." Qualcomm believes that energy consumption, connectivity, AI on the edge, and AI on-device are crucial factors. Southeast Asia is poised to lead in evangelising use cases and what's possible on their platforms.

Qualcomm's Vice President of Product Management, Nitin Kumar, elaborated that there are currently 80 global designs and growing based on the Snapdragon X platform, with more than 50 designs already on the market.

With over 80 designs globally, Qualcomm aims to address a large user base across multiple device price points, form factors, and screen sizes.

Kumar mentioned that the Snapdragon X platform currently focuses on casual gamers, offering a compelling and leading graphics performance. He said that the Snapdragon X platform's frugal power draw enables users to play for much longer periods compared to competitive ecosystems.

Qualcomm is also making strides in the native app ecosystem. According to Kumar, more and more developers are working to support native applications for the Snapdragon X architecture.

Qualcomm cited Microsoft statistics, stating that normal users spend more than 93 percent of their time on native apps natively supported on the Snapdragon X platform.

The company is also making it easy for developers to write native AI applications through its AI Hub. This portal provides over 100 AI models for building AI apps on Snapdragon X.
