Dependence on US chips and operating systems rapidly decreasing

It would appear that US sanctions have done the opposite of what they were supposed to -- the have sped up China's chip and operating system development leading it to be less dependant on the US tech oligarchs.

China’s tech giants have reassured President Xi Jinping that the nation is overcoming its semiconductor crisis, with Huawei leading the charge in tackling US-imposed restrictions.

At a major forum attended by top executives from Huawei and Xiaomi, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei told Xi that China’s reliance on foreign chips and operating systems is rapidly decreasing.

He stated that semiconductor production and operating system development are improving and expected to advance even further, alleviating concerns over the country’s technological independence.

The ongoing US-China chip dispute, which began in 2019, severely impacted Huawei after the US government imposed restrictions cutting off access to advanced semiconductors and software.

The company was forced to develop its own solutions, launching in-house Kirin 5G chips and the HarmonyOS NEXT operating system. While Huawei’s latest smartphones still lag behind Apple and Qualcomm-powered devices in performance, they mark a significant step toward self-sufficiency.

During the meeting, a Chinese technology minister explained that the country’s technological concerns were once described as the “core and soul” of the industry—where “core” represents semiconductors and “soul” refers to operating systems. Ren emphasised that China’s technological challenges wereeasing and that the nation’s rise in the sector will be swift.

The US sanctions had previously blocked Huawei from accessing Google’s mobile services, significantly affecting its software ecosystem. However, Huawei’s advancements signal a major comeback, proving that China’s tech industry is determined to push forward despite restrictions. With government backing and accelerated innovation, the company is poised to redefine China’s technological landscape.
