Makes its eyes water

Buried in AMD’s results on Tuesday was an overlooked number that should put the fear of Zeus into Intel: the company managed to outsell Intel in the data centre space for the first time in history.

Data centre business was AMD’s primary source of earnings, with net revenue reaching a record $3.86 billion in Q4, marking a 69 per cent year-over-year (YoY) increase and a nine per cent quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) rise. Operating income substantially improved, surging 74 per cent YoY to $1.16 billion.

Chipzilla's data centre and AI business unit posted $3.4 billion in revenue, while its operating income reached $200 million.

With mergers and acquisitions, AMD has aggressively sought a slice of the server market, such as its $3.7 billion offer to buy server manufacturer ZT Systems.

AMD's success in the data centre market is a positive sign for its future and its ability to compete with industry giants like Intel.
