Heat-assisted tech delivers monster storage for $600

After more than two decades of hype and endless delays, Seagate has brought its heat-assisted magnetic recording drives to the great unwashed. Now, the riff-raff can buy a 30TB Seagate IronWolf Pro or Exos M hard drive if they have a spare $600. A a slightly smaller 28TB version is going for $570.

Seagate has released its largest hard drive yet, a 32TB model built on the long-awaited heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. The drive is based on Seagate’s advanced Mozaic 3+ platform.

Seagate has officially announced its newest Exos 14 HDD at the OCP summit, a helium filled 14TB HDD aimed at the enterprise market, which uses new MACH.2 Multi Actuator and HAMR technologies, allowing it to hit a record 480MB/s sustained throughput.

According to senior executives familiar with Seagate’s research and development plans, the company plans to fine-tune the next three years of its HDD developments using shingled magnetic recording (SMR), two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR), and heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR).
