The chip, clearly designed for VFX, simulations, and AI model crunching, comes with up to 384MB of L3 cache and 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. It’s a GPU hoarder’s dream. AMD couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Chipzilla either, claiming the 9995WX is 2.2 times faster than Intel’s 60-core Xeon W9-3595X in Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded rendering.
And just in case 96 cores sound like overkill, AMD also offers the regular Threadripper 9000 Series for creators and enthusiasts. The 9980X has 64 cores, 128 threads, a 3.2GHz base clock, and 320MB of L3 cache.
All the new chips sport a 350W TDP and will run on existing sTR5 socket motherboards, assuming the BIOS has been updated.
Pricing is still under wraps, but since the previous 7980X sold for $4,999 in 2023, anyone expecting bargains will be disappointed. Both the standard and Pro WX-Series will hit shelves in July.
If Chipzilla’s sweating, it probably should be.
