AMD unloads 96-core Threadripper Pro 9995WX

Zen 5 monster aims straight at Chipzilla's Xeons

AMD took to Computex to unveil its new Zen 5-powered Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series, and it's going for the throat. The show's star is the Threadripper Pro 9995WX, a hulking 96-core, 192-thread silicon slab aimed squarely at the workstation elite.

The chip, clearly designed for VFX, simulations, and AI model crunching, comes with up to 384MB of L3 cache and 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. It’s a GPU hoarder’s dream. AMD couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Chipzilla either, claiming the 9995WX is 2.2 times faster than Intel’s 60-core Xeon W9-3595X in Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded rendering.

And just in case 96 cores sound like overkill, AMD also offers the regular Threadripper 9000 Series for creators and enthusiasts. The 9980X has 64 cores, 128 threads, a 3.2GHz base clock, and 320MB of L3 cache.

All the new chips sport a 350W TDP and will run on existing sTR5 socket motherboards, assuming the BIOS has been updated.

Pricing is still under wraps, but since the previous 7980X sold for $4,999 in 2023, anyone expecting bargains will be disappointed. Both the standard and Pro WX-Series will hit shelves in July.

If Chipzilla’s sweating, it probably should be.
