Expects more than 50% of the market
During a pre-Computex press conference ARM president Tudor Brown
announced that ARM-based platforms will power more than 50 percent of
future tablet PCs.
Brown cited IDC research which found that the world will be littered
with more than 1.6 billion mobile devices with internet connectivity by
2014. The figure includes 350 million home-used devices, 200 million
multimedia players, 100 million in-car entertainment and information
systems and 500 million mobile PCs. He believes that ARM's market share could reach 70 to 80 percent in some of these segments.
Brown stressed that ARM processors feature significantly lower power
consumption than regular PC chips and that they make life easier for
computer makers, as they have to deal with less heat. ARM chips also
deliver much longer battery life and Brown believes that some mobile
devices will be able to run for a week on a single charge in the
future.
