Europeans have to upgrade or be throttled

It is impressive how easily Apple shuts up journalists. Jobs' Mob managed to convince the tame Apple Press that it was not evil for throttling old iPhones by dropping the cost of battery replacement – but it seems only English and American Apple fanboys will be given the discount.

Victor Peng is now in charge

Xilinx has named Chief Operating Officer Victor Peng as its new CEO and President from 28 January.

Qualcomm is doing well in the high end market, owning almost all of it and grabbing a lot of attention in the mainstream too.

Remains the president of QCT

Two months ago, Fudzilla had a chance to interview Cristiano R. Amon a president of QCT and Alex Katouzian the SVP and general manager of the mobile business unit at Qualcomm. As of January 4th, Cristiano has been promoted to be the president of Qualcomm and continues its role of president of QCT.

H8266 with 4GB RAM

Sony will have at least four new phones coming in early 2018 and the H8266 version with the Snapdragon 845 just got benchmarked. It shows a big improvement over the predecessor.

Decent horsepower

Sony is working on a successor to the Z1 series, and it is Snapdragon 845 based. We expect this phone to launch at the Mobile World Congress in the last days of February 2018.

Intel's 10nm is two years late

Intel hasn't announced its 10nm processors, despite us expecting them before the end of 2017. While there is a good indication that we shall see 10nm from Intel in 2018, it means that Chipzilla is two years behind with 10nm.

John Bruno moves to Google

ATI and later AMD started the great trend of letting journalists talk to actual engineers. Nvidia followed, and soon I had the chance to meet John Bruno, who this week is leaving Apple to shift to Google.

Fudzilla asked around

Over the last few weeks we've met with a few dozen Qualcomm and industry C level executives and of course discussed the potential Broadcom takeover of Qualcomm. The general conclusion is that this won't happen as Broadcom might profit from it at the big expense of Qualcomm.
