Should overclock like nuts
The bit-tech crew has been prowling the Computex floor for some juicy
details on Nvidia's upcoming GTX 460, a performance card based on the
upcoming GF104 core.
The Computex rumour mill has churned out a few interesting tidbits
about the new card. For one, it should offer quite a bit of
overclocking potential, which is something we already talked about in
our previous reports. The GF104 is quite a bit smaller and less complex
than the GF100 core, so it could hit the sweet spot for Nvidia, as it
will deliver higher clocks and solid performance with significantly
lower production costs. Despite this, the GTX 460 will reportedly
feature a 180W TDP at stock clocks, which sounds like quite a lot for
an 8.5-inch card.
Interestingly, the card will apparently feature just 768MB of GDDR5
memory, thanks to its 192-bit memory bus. However, the 192-bit bus
should deliver more bandwidth than a Radeon HD 5770, but it still won't
be able to catch up with the RV870-based HD 5850. The GTX 460 should
feature 240 cores, which is half of what you'd get on a proper GTX 480,
but there's a good chance that it will end up at significantly higher
clocks, so it might have a bit more muscle than you might expect.
The only concern for Nvidia is that AMD could have quite a bit of room to adjust HD 5770 and HD 5850/5830 pricing, so the GTX 460 probably won't have a red carpet welcome once it hits retail sometime in July.
