A city council is saving a bomb on paper after moving its
documents onto Kindle. Agendas for the Sacramento City Council members required
a ream of paper a day and was costing about $1500 a year per council members.
Sacramento City Clerk Shirley Concolino. persuaded the
Council to mandate that the city work toward becoming 80 percent paperless over
the next several years. Concolino bought a few Kindles and netbooks and offered
demonstrations to Council members and their staffers. Even the least tech savvy councilor has become an
ambassador for the idea Concolino said.
The netbooks are more popular than the Kindles among the
members because they are easier to navigate. Kindle is popular among
those who
like to select words they don't understand and immediately get
definition. The Kindles are popular of those who are as blind as a
bat and want to magnify their font sizes. The plan is to spend about
$300 per employee and move the
entire council to an 80 percent paperless office, Concolino said.
