Phison blames Windows 11 update for SSD meltdowns

by on19 August 2025

Promises fixes via partners after drives start coughing up errors

Phison has confirmed that Windows 11’s latest security updates are trashing SSDs, particularly those based on its PS5012-E12 controller, after a wave of failures was reported by users, mostly in Japan.

The dodgy updates, KB5063878 and KB5062660, have caused storage drives to fail during large file write operations, affecting models like the Corsair Force MP600, SanDisk Extreme Pro and others.

Phison said it was “recently made aware” of the widespread issue and is working with partners to identify which controllers are going haywire.

“We are steadfast in our commitment to product integrity,” the firm said in a statement that ticked every box but didn’t actually fix anything.

As usual, end users shouldn’t expect much direct help. Phison is taking the usual route of funnelling fixes through its partners, who will presumably get firmware updates once the root cause is isolated.

Until then, those stuck with an affected SSD are being advised to avoid hammering their drives with large write jobs unless they’re particularly fond of reinstalling Windows.

Microsoft hasn’t said a word about the mess yet. That leaves SSD makers and controller vendors scrambling to explain why their gear suddenly turns to toast when Windows tries to patch a security hole.

Phison’s response is unlikely to calm users who’ve seen their data go up in smoke after trusting Windows Update to do its thing.
